Dear Max,
When you were younger, I would tell you to do things and you would do the opposite. It drove me nuts. Nowadays, you actually listen to me. You may not do what I recommend right away. But within days, weeks, and sometimes months, you surprise me. It shows that you respect my advice. More importantly, you respect the opportunities you are given.
Here's my list of things to do this summer, if you're still listening (and reading):
1. Get a suit.
You need it for Pop Pop's funeral next week. I promise you'll wear it again. Getting your first suit signals maturity. You are so ready for this milestone.
2. Get your driver's permit.
The moment you get it, you'll be closer to getting your license in six months. Your working mom could use a little help with driving you and your sister around.
3. Start test prep.
I know. It's not as fun as looking dapper and driving a car. But it's important, especially these days. I never used to say this, but having a strong SAT or ACT score leads to better results in the admissions process.
4. Play as much tennis as you want.
By the time I reached your age, I felt burnt out by the sport. You are the opposite. Tennis makes you so happy. Never stop doing something you love.
5. Do some college visits.
We've got some planned. I am excited that you are excited about this. I can't wait for our upcoming trips.
6. Volunteer.
You know how I feel about this. Do it because it's the right thing to do. You will be back volunteering with an organization you love. You had so much fun last summer working with the kids. You said to me that you wish you could do it all summer. Swim team practice gets in the way of that. But at least you get to do it when the summer swim team season ends. Make sure to never stop giving back.
7. Brush up on Latin and chemistry.
This is one of those things you told me you wanted to do. I hadn't realized you did Latin last summer on your own. That's something I never thought you'd do, let alone voluntarily. Look at you now. Getting ready for a much more advanced Latin class and AP Chemistry without anyone telling you to do it. You want to do well in your two favorite subjects. I get it. I am proud.
8. Thank your Latin and Honors Chemistry teachers.
You think the world of these two teachers. Let them know how much you appreciate them. Send an email. Not to get anything back in return. Just to say thanks.
9. Practice driving with Zaydie.
Your grandfather taught your sister how to drive. He told me he wants to do the same for you. Cherish those driving lessons. He looks for reasons to spend time with you. You will remember that time with him forever.
10. Have fun.
Hang out with your friends at the pool. Go to Dairy Queen with your older sister. Drag your younger sister to hit tennis balls after dinner. Watch every Phillies game you can. Sleep. Be silly. Make jokes about me and Dad. Daydream about college.
Thanks for reading this. It's ambitious, for sure. Summer doesn't have to be. It's okay if you don't do it all or do it perfectly. You're going to go far.
